Life Skills Experience

The goal of the Life Skills campus is to prepare students for the challenges ahead as they return home. This includes an emphasis on:
  • Becoming self-supervised by following a daily schedule with minimal staff intervention.
  • Learning to successfully deal with adversity that may come up in the future.
  • Learning to set and achieve short and long term goals.
  • Learning how to successfully live independently.

In support of each student’s Individual Transition Plan, their time on the Life Skills campus will include practice in the following areas:

Cooking

Hands–on preparation of daily meals and snacks. This includes a student obtaining a personal food handlers permit and daily practice in:
  • Meal planning
  • Nutrition requirements
  • Grocery shopping
  • Reading and understanding a recipe
  • Recipe measurements
  • Food preparation and clean-up

Time Management

Plan and follow a daily schedule:
  • Develop personal organizational skills
  • Manage time effectively
  • Identify healthy leisure activities

Education Opportunities

  • Identifying interests
  • Information-seeking skills
  • Paying for education/job training

Community Service

  • Volunteering in the community
  • Managing cultural differences
  • Learning to give back and look beyond self

Money Management

Students earn a daily allowance that they use to budget their weekly needs and wants.
  • Earning and budgeting
  • Careful spending
  • Paying bills
  • Saving money on purchases
  • Banking
  • Saving for long-term goals-Earnings from vocational training are placed in a savings account and given to the student at time of discharge.
  • Investing money
  • Credit
  • Loans

Living on your own

Living on the Life Skills Unit prepares students for apartment-style living.
  • Renting an apartment
  • Roommate relationships
  • Furnishing an apartment

Transportation

  • Getting a Driver’s License
  • Buying a car
  • Owning a car
  • Insurance
  • How to access and utilize public transportation
